The biographies of Gunnar and May Carlson, a couple from Moline, Illinois whose military wedding included Ronald Reagan, who lived through the Depression and CCC duty, trained Joe Louis and served in World War II, were the first in Occupied Japan and among the first in Vietnam after the French departure, finishing their service to America as a general and his lady.
Oh My Stars! Kenneth Carlson 9780557287581 Books
In Ken Carlson's family saga "Oh My Stars" we learn more about the distant relatives in the first five chapters than most will ever know about their own grand-parents. The detail of Ken's parents Gunnar and May are told with an ear for accuracy, an eye for facts and a heart possessed only by a son who worshipped them both, flaws and all. This book is a real two in one, providing great military history starting with West Point and ending up with the Vietnam War. "Oh My Stars" also covers taped interviews with both parents where "cracks in the china" are seen but their character stands tall like a waving American flag. My wish is for two smaller books, each a volume of 292 pages. I truly admire the chronology, inciteful comments and search for what makes the Carlsons so special. The affirmitive answer comes through loud and clear and for the grandchildren mandatory bedtime reading.Product details

Oh My Stars! Kenneth Carlson 9780557287581 Books Reviews
Absolutely great! I loved every minute of it. Big hoorahs for Ken and his family!
We thoroughly enjoyed reading Col. Carlson's book, "Oh My Stars". The author goes beyond recounting the life of his parents, and in particular, his father, and gives the reader insight into things such as; Swedish immigration to the U.S. Midwest; life at the U.S. Military Academy of West Point; the Korean War and the Vietnam war.
It was an interesting anthology he presented through taped conversations with his father.
Kenneth Carlson's book is a fine example of how a family memoir can be an engaging, touching and funny epic tale. Mr. Carlson sets out to tell his parents' story so that the generations that follow can learn about their bygone adventures and achievements, but in reading the book, you feel that you get to know them personally. Fine people, you wish you'd met in real life. Mr. Carlson has a gift for story-telling, clear intelligent writing and avoiding cliches all at the same time. A rare combination indeed. Recommended reading for anyone who wishes to write a family memoir, anyone interested in military history, or anyone who shares a Swedish-American ancestry.
Kenneth Carlson does a masterful job of telling the story of his parents. Throughout their lives, Gunnar and May crossed paths with many of the giants of the 20th century, and they personally experienced events which are indelibly scribed in history. Ken Carlson has accomplished the difficult task of telling his parents' stories on a personal level, while firmly establishing them in the greater historical context. This enables the reader to experience many of the defining moments of the 20th century on a personal level. Carlson's wit and intelligent writing keeps the book moving along at a face pace. The love and admiration of a son shines through on this thoroughly enjoyable book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Ken's book about his parent's adventures. The book is a compilation of firsthand accounts, historical data and interwoven with factual snippets that fills the reader with feeling of being a witness to history through Gunner and May's eyes.
Thanks Ken, I really enjoyed your book.
