Hunted was first published by Hodder & Stoughton. Here is a flavour of the press reviews from the print edition
'It’s a neat plot, very well developed … and the climax is as good as anything Dick Francis has come up with.’ Racing Post
‘There is plenty of well-written racing action and weighing-room atmosphere in which Richard Pitman’s expertise as a former top jockey shines through and the tension, so important in a thriller, is kept going from start to finish. Thoroughly recommended.’ Horse & Hound

Hunted The Eddie Malloy Series Book 2 eBook Richard Pitman Joe McNally
Hunted," a British mystery/thriller, is by former top jockey and BBC commentator Richard Pitman and veteran racing journalist Joe McNally. It is the second of the duo's five Eddie Malloy racetrack-set novels, behind [...] and was first published by the respected firm of Hodder & Stoughton in hardcover in 1995. It has been extensively re-edited and tightened for its Kindle release. And it certainly can give what had become the increasingly weak racetrack work of the late former British champion jockey/bestselling author Dick Francis a run for its money.Eddie Malloy, a former champion jockey in the United Kingdom, had been set up, lost his license, and done jail time. Upon his release, he is hanging around the track, scuffling to get back his career in the racing world, which he loves. He finds himself unwillingly involved in the hunt for a killer who is murdering jockeys and other horse racing personalities with a zeal that terrifies the racing world. Then he discovers the murderer has a hit list, and he is on it.
Mind you, I have mixed feelings about horse racing. On the one hand, I've had the inestimable privilege of being present at one of the greatest-ever American shootouts of two superb horses: Affirmed and Alydar at the 1978 Belmont Stakes, third leg of the American Triple Crown, Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont. Alydar's trainer removed the horse's blinkers for the Belmont, saying that if his horse got a better look at Affirmed maybe, after their two previous rivalries in the first two legs of the Triple Crown, it would help inspire him. In the race Affirmed led and set a very slow pace. Alydar was positioned close to the pace, and moved alongside Affirmed with more than seven furlongs to go. For more than six furlongs, the two colts raced neck and neck, pulling away from the rest of the field. Alydar got his nose in front at mid-stretch, but just as Affirmed appeared to tire, he found a second wind. He won by a nose to become racing's 11th (and as of 2012, last) Triple Crown winner. After the third slowest start in Belmont Stakes history, they raced the fastest last mile in the race's history, got the third fastest Belmont, at the time, behind only Secretariat and Gallant Man. Like everyone else in the immense, capacity audience that day, I screamed myself hoarse.
But I have since learned that Thoroughbreds are being bred for lighter and lighter bones, to be faster, and at two years old, are raced too young, before their bones, such as they are, are fully set. There are an inexcusable number of equine fatalities at the races. Nor does the racing industry always treat its should-be honored retirees well: a scandalized world was informed a few years ago that a Kentucky Derby champion had been slaughtered for dog food in Japan.
On the initial release of the print edition, "Horse & Hound" said, "There is plenty of well-written racing action and weighing-room atmosphere in which Richard Pitman's expertise as a former top jockey shines through and the tension, so important in a thriller, is kept going from start to finish. Thoroughly recommended."
The Pitman/McNally duo does indeed do a very strong job on racing atmosphere and the weighing room. The plot is well-thought out and developed and moves along like a champion Thoroughbred: muscular and lean. The ending is comparable with Dick Francis at his best. However, I did find the plot rather thin, especially as the book, in its kinetic speed, also lacks the place descriptions I enjoy so much. But I sure enjoyed the ride.

Hunted The Eddie Malloy Series Book 2 eBook Richard Pitman Joe McNally Reviews
So happy to have found an author who can similarly engage my fun reading time with tales of British bravery and horse business. My favorite.
Action packed, fast paced and great read.
Action, suspense, danger, horse racing ! You can't ask for more!
These are can't put it down books-- better not start it at 11pm!
This is the first time I have read any Richard Pitman's books. I am a big fan of Dick Francis, but thought I would try the Eddie Malloy series. I really enjoyed it. It had all the details of life of the jockeys, their problems etc. This book had lots of intrigue, suspense, and humour of Francis's books. I will certainly buy more of these.
A good mystery but it didn't keep me involved as much as the first one, Warned Off, did. I have hopes that the succeeding ones will be better. Warned Off was a terrific read and the second mystery had a great deal to live up to. I'll still read the third one, but I'll wait for a better price than I paid for Hunted. Warned Off was free.
I picked up Hunted during a free promo, despite having about zero interest in horse racing, and now I'm hooked!
Hunted is terrifically written and wonderfully plotted. The main character, jockey Eddie Malloy, is drawn into a murder mystery that had me engrossed from the first to the last.
Now I have to go back and see how it all began!
The authors have a new fan in me.
Highly recommended!
I haven't read the first in the series, but you don't have to in order to enjoy Hunted. I'm going to go back and pick it up though. I liked the story that much.
Eddie Malloy is trying to rebuild his life after just having his jockey's license restored. Then his girl friend leaves him, he is in serious trouble, suspected first of the murder of another jockey, then things proceed to get even worse as the new life he is building begins to fall apart.
The characters were good. The mystery made sense without being too obvious. The writing was smooth and professional. It's what I look for in a mystery. I can't say it was so excellent I'd give it 5-stars but it's definitely worth a read if you're looking for a new mystery series.
