Synopsis: Emma has only one guard shack left before she releases her brother into the zombies-only zone, or the Z-Zone, as the locals call it.

Along the way she keeps Sam docile with a plastic container full of raw meat and the only six commands he knows to obey. He doesn't understand what's about to happen to him, but she does.

If only letting him go was as easy as saying goodbye.

My Thoughts: This is a very sad story, but beautifully written and highly evocative. It has some of the darker elements shared with the first two stories in this series. All the short stories in this series are highly recommended for fans of the zombie genre.

I'm not really a big "Zombie" fan, but I might have to be a "Fischer Zombie" fan, now. While brief, this short-story was actually very well-developed, with characters that didn't seem shallow or washed-out at all. It left me wanting to know more about Emma and Sam's life, especially with the little snippets of story that are peppered here and there-- Training him, stealing glances with him. Heck, just the aspect of a "disease", and their parents, makes me curious.

Which brings me to my complaint- I read this in all of fifteen minutes. Maybe less. It's about 17 pages long, which kind of feels like a chapter out of the middle of a book I would've really enjoyed, rather than just a novella. It really does leave a lot to be desired, while at the same time having a well-plotted storyline and characters with depth. I know that makes no sense... You have to read it, I guess, and it is worth the fifteen minutes.

I'll be keeping my eye out for a full-length novel from Mr. Fischer, for sure. He definitely has the potential to be an "acclaimed author".
