A Spoonful of Murder brought me back to cozies. I had forgotten what it felt like to lose yourself in a cozy – but maybe a little scary and dangerous – story. A Spoonful of Murder brought that back to me.When we meet Lucky, she is talking to her mom, reassuring her, telling her not to worry, that she will take care of things. Then we learn that Lucky is back home because her parents have died in a car crash. She has inherited the family business, the By the Spoonful soup shop, and she’s come home to run it. Her grandfather, Jack, is there and assures her he can handle things, but she’s worried about him. He seems a little forgetful and confused. Is it Alzheimer’s?
I liked Lucky from the start and wanted to learn how she would fare in Snowflake. She wasn’t estranged from her parents at the time of their death, but she hadn’t been around much. She was “off in the big city” somewhere trying to find her way, to be a success on her own. She is overwhelmed with guilt about all the things she wishes she had done but now won’t have the chance. She is trying to step up and do what needs to be done. She is sincere and determined – and just plain nice. So when she found that dead body my heart went out to her. Sure, sometimes she seems a little naïve and immature, but I’ve just met her and I already want to get to know her better. After all, how many “real” people do we meet that we need to learn a little more about before we really make up our minds?
Jack is feisty and cantankerous but lovable. He looks out for Lucky as much as she looks out for him – they are family.
Snowflake and the cast of supporting characters just kind of sneak up on you. When you’re in the soup shop you forget the outside world exists, but when you rediscover it, it’s beautiful. And the people in the soup shop and Snowflake? We learn a little more about them as we go along. Very interesting cast of characters. Some nice, some not so much. Interesting to watch Lucky interact with them.
Elias, though, not quite sure about him yet. Her feelings for him seem like a schoolgirl crush, which makes him seem old and rather stuffy. However, he does seem to have some feelings for her so I want to read more to see if this goes anywhere. And if he’s really that old!
The soup is an added bonus – some mixings I never would have thought of. Worth a try.
Connie Archer has done a great job with the first in a new series – good people, good place, good food. I’ll be visiting Snowflake again!

A Spoonful of Murder A Soup Lover Mystery Connie Archer Books Reviews
Lucky Jamison returns home to Snowflake, Vermont, following the unexpected death of her parents. Her grandfather, Jack, is still here as well as the soup shop, By The Spoonful, that now belongs to her. When her chef is arrested for the murder of a woman whose body is found behind the Spoonful, the mystery begins. Love the characters, their relationships/interactions with one another, the mystery, and the setting. The relationship between Lucky and Grandfather Jack is a wonderful story in itself. The Spoonful is a place I'd love to eat, the town I'd love to visit, and the characters people I'd love to meet. So glad I found this series, looking forward to the next book.
This soup lover's mystery is a debut for this author and of course, this storyline is going to be a series. Although it did take me several days to get through the book, I found overall it an enjoyable read although I figured out the murderer about halfway through the book. The author left quite a few clues as to who it was. However, by the end I was familiar with the characters and looking forward to reading about their adventures in the next installment.
Set in Snowflake Vermont, the main character owns a diner that specializes in soups and sandwiches (inherited from her folks who were killed in an accident). There are some recipes in the very back of the book which are reminiscent of those that the characters partake of in the story and actually sound really good. As with many murder mysteries, the wrong person gets accused of the crime and the owner of the soup diner is the one that saves the day. The story is about how she goes about that and of course I do not want to say too much as it will give the story away.
There is some adult language but not nearly as much as in some novels and was of the rather mild nature, the pace was a bit slow for me but all in all every page had something that caught my interest. I think this is one series that I will be looking forward to and you do get a sneak peek with a few pages at the very end of the book which serves to "whet" your appetite.
This first installment of the Soup Lover's Mystery series is sure to chase away the winter chills! Set within the small, ski resort town of Snowflake, Vermont, the By The Spoonful Soup Shop has been bringing customers in from the cold for many years...that is until a tourist is found dead at the back door and the primary suspect is the shop's very own chef himself! Pushing aside her heavy heart and desire to mourn the loss of her parents, Lucky is determined to discover the identity of the real killer and quickly finds herself in harm's way. With the wide array of possible suspects, it was a challenge to guess who the guilty party was and the killer's identity was quite a surprise in the end. Filled with a cast of endearing characters and several red-herrings, Connie Archer has created a wonderful beginning to a new cozy mystery series. I look forward to visiting with Lucky Jamieson often...she's bold, independent, and has a way of saying exactly what's on her mind, not necessarily at the most proper moments now mind you, but an asset nonetheless. And her grandfather, Jack, is just a charming as can be and is always there to lend a hand. I enjoyed this a very much and look forward to reading the next installment, A Broth of Betrayal, to be released April 2nd by Berkley as well. In the meantime, I'm going to try some of the incredible soup recipes that were included as well as the sandwich recipes...perfect for a winter's evening all the way around! This is an excellent cozy mystery and I easily give it a Five!
