There is something VERY WRONG with Kindle Edition, December 18, 2014 ---$2.99. It downloaded to my new Kindle Voyage just fine but when I attempt to read it something strange happens: The text is nice and black for a second and then the whole screen becomes highlighted and the text is a dull grey. Sooo....I downloaded it to my Kindle White. Or rather I attempted to download it. No matter what I did, it would not download. I tried sending it from online, then tried to Sync from the White and nothing. It's really discouraging. Anyway, this MORE EXPENSIVE version $2.99 is definitely defective in multiple ways. Grrrrrrr...

I'm glad I got the sample. Once you get past the scholarly preface and begin to read the book itself, it all falls apart. The footnotes are mixed in the with the body of the text. It does not appear that anyone has actually tried to read the kindle edition of this book after publishing it.
Have read various versions of the tales several times in elementary, high school and university. Reading them again was enjoyable and called forth memories. Memories of events and people from long ago. Nostalgic in some ways, but enjoyed the mental pictures again of days past.

These are written in an older form of English.
For English students, or anyone who loves the classics of literature, this is a must read. Brilliantly crafted, great stories told in verse. Right up there with Shakespeare as the pinnacle of English. Easily 5 stars.
A classic, with an interesting blend of of archaic and modern English. Some will object to the inclusion of the modern words into the body of the text, asserting that it will interfere with the meter of the poetry. However, I found the technique a great help to my understanding, and much less disruptive to the experience of reading on a digital device.
What can I say? It's Chaucer. This is a monument in English literature not just for the stories as literature but also for a view into life in the late 14th century in England.
If you have no prior understanding of the stories contained in the book, be sure to read the foreword/preface. The information is invaluable for enriching the stories by giving them a time, place and purpose. It's interesting and sometimes hilarious what kind of tales "pilgrims" on the way to a religious shrine can formulate.
